Air Plants (Tillandsia) are native to Mexico and South America and are part of the bromeliad family. They are epiphytes, which means in their natural habitat they grow by attaching themselves to other plants and tree branches. Air Plant (Tillandsia) do not need soil to survive and most will flower normally when in their mature stage.
Light |
Air Plant (Tillandsia) require bright, but indirect light. |
Watering |
Water your Air Plant (Tillandsia) by soaking in water for 30 minutes, shake it and let it dry upside down for 4 hours before placing it back to its original position. Alternatively you can mist your Air Plant (Tillandsia) thoroughly 1-2 times a week. |
Humidity |
Air Plant (Tillandsia) love humidity and can be placed in a bathroom, or alternatively mist with a spray bottle to increase humidity. |
Temperature |
Air Plant (Tillandsia) prefer temperatures above 10c. Keep away from direct light as the sun will burn it in Summer and it will be too cold in Winter. |
Fertilizer |
Use an indoor plant food or specialist Air Plant spray once a month all year round. |
Toxicity |
Air Plants (Tillandsia) are non-toxic. |
Additional Care Information |
Some Air Plant (Tillandsia) turn red before flowering. After it has flowered it will produced ‘pups’ and the parent plant will die. It is normal for Air Plant (Tillandsia) to shed their outer leaves and you can simply remove these. |
Troubleshooting |
If your Air Plant (Tillandsia) is falling apart and is soft, there may been water left sitting between the leaves. Sadly there is no saving it after this, with the next one make sure to leave it upside down after watering. Crispy leaves means your Air Plant (Tillandsia) is not getting enough moisture. Should this happen you should water or mist it more often. |
